TJ Queue - A message queue for Joomla

As we go on in our pursuit to use Joomla in never-seen-before use cases a few interesting problems came forth.

  • A web-hooks implementation: Similar to how plugins can declare triggers they want to listen to, webhooks allow external applications to register URLs that can receive a JSON payload when an action happens in an application. Since there could be multiple webhooks, each webhook call is queued as a message and happens asynchronously.
  • In Shika: Recalculating user progress in the background. When a new lesson is added to a course, Shika recalculates each enrolled user’s progress to take into account the newly added lesson. When there are a lot of lessons and a large number of users enrolled in the course, this recalculation cannot happen in real time. In this case, a recalculation job does this in the background once the lesson is saved.

Tekdi Enters its Teens !

Teens is that time between being a child and an adult when you start experiencing freedom & start liking the taste of it. It's that time when you slowly start taking the controls of your life into your own hands. It is like the first time you drive a car on a learner’s license with an adult riding shotgun. It's that time when your parents slowly start transitioning to being ‘guardians’ and helping you take control.

Depending on the nature of the business and the experience of its leaders, companies will most likely go through similar phases. When the company is just getting started, it needs careful nurturing & constant care from its leaders.

As it grows more people are added to the team, a culture starts to form and systems are put in place to allow the company to function in some areas ‘on its own’. This independence will free its leadership to start nurturing various aspects of the company to help it grow bigger and better in its areas of focus. It is a time to dream, experiment and go after aspirations with a passion and hunger. It is a time to explore, a time to build on the experience and guidance and grow.

As Tekdi turns 13, it is a time for us to reflect and a time to look forward.

Beware of these mistakes while coding in PHP-Part 2

Mistake 2: Forgetting to unset the reference variable after the loop.

In the previous blog of the series we started with the isset function mistake and I have promised to post about the next mistake which is leaving dangling array references after foreach loop.

While working with arrays, we need foreach to iterate over arrays. In some case, we might be just displaying each array element while iterations but in some case, we might need to manipulate or operate on each element. When there is a case, where we need to operate on each element, using references in foreach loops can be useful. See below code snippet.
