Shika 1.3.10 brings support for large exams, integration plugins and more!

Shika-1.3.10-is-here

We are happy that we have yet another feature packed Shika release getting released today! Key highlights are - Support for Large Exams, Safe Exam Browser integration & a new “integrations” plugin structure that allows plugins to define course level configuration.

Ability to add a user to a Joomla user group and adding a user to an Easysocial group are core integrations that use the new feature. Another interesting feature is an option to separate buying and enrollment, so users can buy a course but start the subscription at a later date.

TJ Queue - A message queue for Joomla

TJ-Queue-is-here

As we go on in our pursuit to use Joomla in never-seen-before use cases a few interesting problems came forth.

  • A web-hooks implementation: Similar to how plugins can declare triggers they want to listen to, webhooks allow external applications to register URLs that can receive a JSON payload when an action happens in an application. Since there could be multiple webhooks, each webhook call is queued as a message and happens asynchronously.
  • In Shika: Recalculating user progress in the background. When a new lesson is added to a course, Shika recalculates each enrolled user’s progress to take into account the newly added lesson. When there are a lot of lessons and a large number of users enrolled in the course, this recalculation cannot happen in real time. In this case, a recalculation job does this in the background once the lesson is saved.

Creating Rich Personalised Certificates with Shika

creatingrichpersonalisedcertificateswithshikaa

Isn’t it a great feeling when you are rewarded and recognised when you complete a milestone or a goal? Online courses are no different. In fact, for online courses, recognition is even more important as they lack the physical touch points and personal motivation that is usually part of ‘In Person’ learning.  Low completion rates are the biggest bane of online learning. Rewards and recognition is a great way to fight this.

Personalised certificates are just one of the many features that Shika offers to let you reward your users.

A certificate is much more than a piece of paper. It is a recognition of one’s work and gives a sense of entitlement. They are a great way to showcase your achievements & add to one’s academic and work profile.

iSpring SCORM officially supported in Shika !

Shika now supports ISpring SCORM content

We are happy to announce that Shika now has official support for iSpring SCORM content. Shika developers and technical experts at iSpring recently conducted compatibility tests to ensure that iSpring content works well with Shika.

Authoring good quality SCORM content can be a long and exhausting process. iSpring makes this a breeze ! With iSpring’s suite of authoring tools, you can turn your PowerPoint presentations into supercharged e-courses in a snap. iSpring authoring tools not only preserve animations, triggers and timings of PowerPoint presentations but also allow to enhance them with different types of interactive activities.

iSpring TalkMaster allows you to design interactive dialogue simulations to train your employees' communication skills in a safe environment. With iSpring QuizMaker, creating interactive quizzes is faster and easier than ever before, thanks to the new visual question editing mode. iSpring Cam, records “how to” tutorials and inserts them into your courses or publishes them directly to your YouTube channel.

Shika 1.1.9 is out with hierarchy based assignments

shika1.1._20170711-045558_1
We are happy to announce the release of Shika 1.1.9 which is a feature and maintenance release. We have consciously made a decision to do releases in the 1.1x series that move away from the ideal principle of semantic versioning in order to fill feature gaps in the 1.1x series before embarking on the next true major release which will be 1.2. So expect to see more feature releases in the 1.1x branch that make the extension more solid and enterprise ready.

This release introduces a new feature that has been a horizontal extension for Techjoomla but wasn't released as yet - com_hierarchy. This lets you set context specific hierarchy relations between users. The utilisation for this is mainly to set training managers for users. These 'Managers' shall be able to assign & enrol courses to users under them from the frontend with the new Assignment workflow that is also released in this version. This is also a dependency to our migration to TJ reports which will allow for features like Teacher reports and Manager reports in v1.1.10.

Besides this major feature, we have also introduced a configuration for Certificate orientation & introduced a spent time column in the attempts view on the frontend.

Thank you guys for all the Love and support, we’re hoping to see same kind of enthusiasm from you guys which will keep us motivated and we will be able to maintain a steady pace of the development, getting you all some fabulous features in Shika.

What’s next?

In order to keep a fast pace of development and at the same time ensure that you have stable releases to use on your live sites, we are going to do development in 2 parallel tracks. The Second track outputs shall be shared with subscribers as Alpha/Beta releases to take early feedback.  Look out for updates on the roadmap during the webinar.
