Authorize.net Payments

Wondering why the Authorize.net payment gateway does not process a payment? Meaning that when someone puts in a credit card and you click process, they system defaults to a thank you screen with payment stating pending? Should it not process the credit card and automatically be approved?

Any help would be great.
